What Are Isolation Procedures?
An isolation procedure is a set of predetermined steps that are to be followed when workers perform electrical inspections, maintenance and works.
The purpose of following these safe isolation procedures is to control the environment and other hazards associated with the work, and to ensure that entry or contact with restricted equipment is regulated and controlled.
Why Are Isolation Procedures Important?
The correct electrical isolation procedures go a long way to ensuring that people working on and maintaining electrical works remain safe. It’s also a great way to ensure that the equipment being worked on is managed correctly, and that minimal disturbance is made to the operation of business.
For us at AEI we’re putting further emphasis on these safety procedures in particular the use of lockout equipment and personal protective locks.
Working in a commercial setting means that often there are a number of different people on-site who can potentially get involved or crossover with the electrical works being completed. Without the correct use of the isolation procedures there is nothing stopping these separate parties from interfering with works. This is particularly evident if these parties are not correctly informed and warned about what works are taking place and the associated dangers.
Un-warned involvement presents many possible safety issues, in fact consequences can be potentially fatal if safe isolation procedures are not obeyed. That’s why AEI strictly follows the ‘lock out process’ in which the use of padlocks, multi-padlock hasps and danger tags are compulsory when controlling isolation points.
While there is no way to completely eliminate the risk associated with electrical isolations, streamlining and standardising isolation procedures is a sure way to manage and mitigate risk more effectively.
